NEW CLIENTS

Most people come to me when they are in crisis.

They have been coping for a while but suddenly, what they were doing is no longer working...

Most get referred to me by someone they trust or they find me online.

Even though they are struggling, some wait 3 - 6 months before making the first appointment. They try to endure it for a bit longer hoping things will change. But ultimately, they know if they don’t change, things are likely to get worse.

If you are in this situation, don’t feel bad. It doesn’t matter how wealthy someone is, how successful they are or how many certificates they have; we all have painful problems.

Culturally in Germany (like in many countries) there is a lot of shame, blame and guilt held in our bodies. We feel like we are not good enough, not doing enough and we often feel like we deserve to endure the pain and suffering.

On top of this, our fear and shame about people finding out, can lead us into isolation and loneliness. But it doesn’t’ have to to be this way…

How I work

Trauma patterns that habitually control us

When we are young, we learn certain coping mechanisms that we hope will keep us safe. When we get older, these same coping mechanisms and automatic habitual behaviours restrict us and keep us trapped in old patterns. You have to remember these strategies were created by a very young version of you, who are had limited knowledge, skill and capacity. Say thank you and honour this part of you while learning new ways of relating and coping.

That’s where the Somatic Therapy (bodywork) and Grinberg Method comes in.

Traditional therapy vs Somatic Therapy (Bodywork)

Depending on the person and their preferred way to work, I think both can be effective and complimentary. The same way you might see a dietician and also have a personal trainer to reach your fitness goals (it’s even better if you have someone who understands both).

I have a Masters in Psychology, I’m a Somatic Therapist certified in the Grinberg Method (bodywork) and I’m also a Psychotherapist in-training.

Why you ask? Because I’m a big believer in learning and I think it’s important to be educated in a wide range of modalities in your area of interest. There is a famous quote by Abraham Maslow: "If the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail." I am someone who wants access to many tools.

At this point in time, I am most passionate about bodywork and for me personally, the Grinberg Method is provided the most efficient, consistent and long term results for me and my clients.

I like bodywork because it bypasses the mind and mental loops. We start each session by talking briefly about what’s going on, but then we look at the story the body is telling us which is sometimes different to what the mind is saying.

We can argue for years with our mind (and our therapist), but our body always tells the truth.

Why the Grinberg Method?

Somatic therapy and bodywork has become increasingly popular (especially in Germany) and this broad term covers so many modalities across different profession. For example: osteopathy, massage, manual lymph drainage, somatic experiencing and zero balancing all fall under the umbrella of “bodywork” but they have different goals and objectives, and the training also varies dramatically between modalities.

I like the Grinberg Method because it is a body-based learning modality.

This is different because with many of the other modalities, the therapist “works on you” eg. They make the adjustment / release the knot but if nothing changes in your life, chances are you’ll need to see them again in 2-4 weeks to do the exact same adjustment.

How does the Grinberg Method work?

In a Grinberg Method Session we are working together. As a practitioner, I’m looking out for two things in each session:

  1. I’m looking what shows up in the body when you talk about the issue (contractions, tension, closures, pain, tightness, emotions) and through attentive, touch, breath and movement I work with you release the old traumas. And…

  2. I’m also looking at the pattern and sequence in which the trauma patterns occur habitually / automatically in the body (maybe you hold your breath, then tighten your right hip, then your head moves forward and gets heavy, then your eyes squint and get tight etc).

My job is to work with you to understand and recognise chronic tension / trauma patterns in the body, and then give you options (in the body) to interrupt and drop them.

This is where you can start to access freedom from within. When you are not scared of being triggered or having intense emotions because you have the tools, skills and resources to support yourself.

What issues do you work with?

It's hard for me to define this because new clients come to me when they are suffering and in crisis. This can be anything from mental health, physical pain, relationship issues, past abuse etc. But as we move through the initial issue and towards the clients goal, there’s a natural opening to work on other areas of life. So even with just one client, we move through many areas of life / issues.

The most important factor is your openness and willingness to learn.

Common themes clients come to me with are:

What should I expect in my first session?

The first session is an in-take session and goes for 90 mins (€135). Follow up sessions are 60 mins (€110).

The first session is longer because it requires an initial diagnosis. The extra time allows us to discuss your history and the issue you want to work with in detail. You can ask questions and make sure it’s a good fit.

Sessions are typically conducted with partial clothing / underwear but if you are more comfortable with clothes, that’s also ok.

At the end of the session you will have a moment to rest and if you would like exercises to practice at home, this can also be provided upon request (highly recommended as you will get more out of the sessions if you practice the exercises at home).
