In today’s society, you can easily move through the world with your heart closed
That’s the trickiest thing about heart closures; you can easily move through the world with your heart closed and be happy, successful, independent and free.. and hardly anyone would notice.
On one hand it’s great because no one can hurt you, but it’s also painful because the heart closure also stops someone from feeling you, seeing you and experiencing you fully.
Chronic heart closures due to old trauma
It hurts to be vulnerable…
Our heart closure patterns often start in early childhood and then continue throughout our lives.
When we are young, the feeling of heartbreak, abandonment, rejection, criticism and betrayal can be so overwhelming, we tell ourselves we will never trust or love again. It’s too dangerous to love freely - people will take advantage of us and manipulate us.
Our heartbreak can also come in the form of grief, disappointment and sadness or frustration. Extreme loss, can make us want to crawl inwards and never come out.
If these old wounds are not tended to (felt, acknowledged and released) they stay trapped in the body and stop us from connecting with ourselves and others.
We then become immune to the numbness and move through the world this way. Sometimes we might feel happy inside but the world never gets to see it.
Defining heart openness
Heart openness does not mean being nice all the time, constantly vulnerable, or unprotected.
Heart openness refers to the ability to stay present with emotions, feelings and body sensations (even the really difficult ones) - without armouring, numbing, or collapsing - while also remaining grounded and being able to choose how to respond.
Heart closures are patterns to avoid pain
Heart closures are habitual tension patterns used to avoid pain (ie. when things are too much, we close). These patterns load up in our physical body - automatically.
Everyone will have their own unique pattern and sequence of contractions but in most cases it involves bracing against pain or bracing in the anticipation of pain.
Physical tension patterns might include:
• Restricted or shallow breathing • closing the chest • clenching butt cheeks • going numb, tensing the forehead • clenching the jaw • twisting the hip • lifting the shoulders • tensing the back • emotional distancing / disappearing • pulling away from the heart area • hiding and energetically shielding •
The heart closure isn’t the issue. The issue is that it’s often chronic and we don’t know how to stop it once it’s triggered.
We want our bodies to protect us if there is a threat so the closure isn’t the problem. The issue is that so many of us don’t even know when and if heart is closed because the closure is chronic.
It’s like when the person who has anger issues doesn’t think they have any issues, because they are always angry and anger it’s their default baseline.
The rude awakening
When you finally feel your heart, old pain resurfaces…
If you’ve had a chronic heart closure and suddenly start to feel your heart, chances are something unexpected happened in your life and cracked it wide open. This could be a person, a life crisis, an event, a movie, nature, or even the grief of someone dying.
Sometimes our heart opens from bliss and sometimes times it opens from extreme pain. But once it opens, the ache and agony of suppressed hurt and pain from past traumas can erupt like glass shards piercing your heart. You suddenly realise, that thing you buried and thought was over, is still in your system and impacting your life.
Why does the old pain feel endless?
When the old trauma and heart ache loads up in your body from the past, so does the younger version of you who could not cope with the overwhelming emotions - the thoughts and memories from your younger self also load up.
In this moment, it feels endless in your body because it’s been trapped in your body in time and is finally being heard, felt and expressed.
With the help of a Grinberg practitioner guiding you, you’ll be able to release these old traumas from your body and start to open your heart again.
How the Grinberg Method can help with heart closures…
Release old heartaches and trauma
As you learn to relax and open, old pain will start coming to the surface and you will be guided to meet and feel the pain. By feeling it fully and letting the pain move through your body, the trapped energy can be released and new energy can flow. New sensations will start to emerge as your heart begins to open
Stop chronic heart closure patterns
In a session, I start by asking you questions about the issue you want to work with and then start tracking the patterns of closure.
For example, I look at what you do in your body when you talk about being rejected / betrayed / abandoned etc-. I look at how you breathe, tense, freeze, collapse, or disconnect. I track the sequence of what you do automatically and then teach you to stop the pattern yourself. We then work on different ways to stop a pattern.
Train the body to be open to receiving
At the end of the session, I can provide you with optional bodywork attention and body awareness exercises that work on opening and softening the chest and heart area. This usually involves breath exercises as most heart closures have shallow breathing in the patten.
By training a little bit each day, you’ll start to notice changes in your body. You’ll start to feel more sensations and a wider range of emotions; how people perceive you will change.
